Remembering Traditions

There was a time when purchasing a Michigan fishing license if you wanted to fish for trout, a separate "trout & salmon" stamp was required. Every year, a new stamp was created by an artist selected by the DNR. The stamp was affixed to the license indicating proof of purchase. The tradition of the trout stamp disappeared some years ago. It was, for many years, a keepsake that found its way to the collectibles box tucked away in my tying desk. Today's licenses? Not so interesting. Come March 31 of the year; they go in the trash!

Today is the eve of the Michigan Trout Opener, which begins every year on the last Saturday of April. Unlike many events these days, it hasn't been canceled, but it will be void of the many traditions that are associated with it. If you are among the many practitioners of this annual celebration and circumstances prevent your presence, fret not, the trout are happy.
